Another book read
Mar. 30th, 2009 10:58 pmAnd hey, this one is posted in a timely manner! Yay!
New Boy, by Julian Houston: Yet another VSBA. I'm getting through them, really, but there's 25 in all, and it takes awhile. Yet another historical fiction book on the list this year. (In past years there have been one, and there's eight this year, plus two fantasy books set in vaguely medieval-ish settings.) This one is set in the 60s. The main character is the first black student at a previously all-white boarding school in Connecticut. Although he's treated well, he sees his classmates treat Italian and Jewish classmates with the sort of bigotry that he's used to experiencing in the south. Of course, it's all set against the backdrop of the Civil Rights movement, with the main character eventually participating in a lunch counter sit-in in his hometown. That description makes it sound a little busy, I suppose, but it's not. It's very nicely paced. In fact, I could hardly put it down. Another book that I don't think I ever would have read but for the VSBAs, but that I'm happy I did.
