I guess I'm on a roll with reading right now.

Bone by Bone by Bone, by Tony Johnston: Another VSBA book. This is one of the rare ones that I don't care for, at all. It's set in Tennessee (probably the reason it was chosen at all, I think) in the 1950s, and like virtually every book set in the American South during the 50s and 60s, it deals heavily with racism. In this case, the main character, who is white, is best friends with a black boy, and his father has major problems with it. My problem with the book was that the antagonists, especially the main character's father, were so unrelentingly evil that I wanted nothing more than to rip out every page they appeared on and burn them all. Is this realistic? Of course. Is it an enjoyable read? Hell no. Am I glad I read it? It honestly didn't tell me anything I didn't already know, so I'm neutral there. Good for being on the VSBA list? Maybe. I just didn't like it, and I skimmed the whole book. One of my personal turn-offs in a book is an antagonist that is so incredibly vile that I simply can't read the book without getting a stress headache on behalf of the characters. This is one of those books.
